Issuing a Certificate of Criminal Record
Every Bulgarian citizen residing temporarily or permanently in the territory of Canada can apply for and obtain a certificate of criminal record through the Consular Service of the Republic of Bulgaria in Toronto or Ottawa. The certificate of criminal record is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Bulgarian and is received electronically at the embassy.
Required Documents
Bulgarian Citizens:
- Application form;
- Original ID card (copy is not required);
- Declaration of identity (in case of name change).
Foreign Citizens:
- Completed application form in Bulgarian;
- Original passport;
- Declaration of identity (in case of name change);
- A copy of a document with a foreigner's Personal Identification Number, if there is one (for example: Foreigner's Residence Card, Registration Card from the State Agency for Refugees at the Bulgarian Ministry, etc.)
-Other documents from the foreigner's stay in Bulgaria, if any (for example: Diploma, Address registration for the period of residence, etc.)
(If the person does not speak Bulgarian, they are encouraged to use the services of a qualified translator)
NOTE: All Criminal Records are issued in the Bulgarian Language! It is your responsibility to get the Record further translated into English with one of the Translators registered with the Consulate.
A fee of 20 Canadian dollars is collected for issuing a certificate of criminal record.
The certificate of criminal record is issued within 7 days.
If the person wishes to obtain a certificate of criminal record with an "Apostille," the fee is 24 Canadian dollars.
In this case, however, its receipt at the embassy takes several months since it must be sent in its original form. The person pays an additional fee for sending the certificate by DHL, 44.70 euros, to be paid to DHL.
The validity period of the certificate of criminal record is 6 months.
